It's Perfectly Normal update

An Anchorage School District committee recommends a book some parents found offensive is to remain on the shelves. The decision will be sent to the main school board for a final decision.

A lawsuit has been filed to prevent Chicago's Sulzer library from removing 35,000 books.

Another organization has joined the fight against the DMCA.

Librarian shortage

The following article is not really in the spirit of this weblog, but I wanted to get another post up here so it doesn't seem like we're morbidly dwelling on the WTC/Pentagon attacks: Librarian shortage may limit services.

Strangely quiet

It's strangely quiet in my office right now. The law firm I work for bought pizza for the staff, and everyone is upstairs right now eating and discussing yesterday's events.

I really couldn't, though. Part of it is the irrationally panicked state many of my co-workers are in right now. It's a tough time, but overreacting only makes the times tougher.

So I've kept to myself today. I don't reveal much about what I think, because I still don't really know what to think, other than this whole situation is just odd.

I'm not a religious man, and I don't say prayers. But on what for me is a spiritual level, I do think about everyone who has lost someone, and I can only hope that even though their pain will never end, their memories can make their lives livable.

Okay, I'm rambling on a bit, so I'll just say my heart goes out to everyone today.

Take care.

SSSCA, Canadian DMCA

See, it is in times like these that I suddenly sympathise with the all the right-wing militias: the government is out to get us!

For example, the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act would essentially require your computer to prevent you from downloading "uncopyrighted" material. Since the attempt to shut down Napster was a pyhrric victory, this law would be the ultimate way for the recording industry to end the downloading of MP3s. For a better description of it, visit Wired's article.

Oh, and don't prepare to move to Canada if this bill passes, because Canada is getting ready to pass its own version of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.
