New Mexico church burns Harry Potter books

L.A.C.K. is back! A little later than I wanted, because I had the flu all last week. Ugh.

A New Mexico church has burned Harry Potter books and other such evil things while protesters demonstrated nearby. Then the protestors were burned because "demonstrated" has the word "demon" in it!

Communications Decency Act, RIAA out of touch

The dead-sexy NCSF is asking a New York judge to throw out the last remnants of the extremely scary Communications Decency Act, which the U.S. Supreme Court tore apart a few years ago.

Oh, here's news: the music industry is completely out of touch with consumers.

'Fellowship of the Ring' Day 2001

The first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy comes out today. Here's what the critics are saying:

  • Rita Kempley, Washington Post: "The long-awaited adaptation of the first book of that trilogy, with its spectacular scenery, stupefying effects and epic scope, is a dream come true."
  • Mick Lasalle, San Francisco Chronicle: "It's a wonderful movie."
  • Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian: "In the end, signing up to the movie's whole hobbity-elvish universe requires a leap of faith ... a leap I didn't feel much like making."
  • Elvis Mitchell, New York Times: "The playful spookiness of Mr. Jackson's direction provides a lively, light touch."
  • Rob Blackwelder, SPLICEDwire: "This film may well be the all-time cinematic champion of the fantasy genre."
  • MaryAnn Johanson, The Flick Filosopher: "Jackson has adapted this very beloved pillar of fandom so perfectly that it feels like we've known it forever."
  • Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly: "A great picture, a triumphant picture, a joyfully conceived work of cinema that ... would appear to embrace Tolkien's classic with love and delight."

DCMA

Good ol' LLRX.com has an interesting article on the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

There's more on this from New York Times.

And from 1998, Rights v. Rights takes a look at the maze of issues that arise when you're a member of an information society (as opposed to being a member of The Information Society.)

Harry Potter display removed, KPMG

Without going into too much detail, I'd like to point out that the security personel at Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport need to learn, besides customer service skills, how to do a proper search of carry-on luggage. Aren't I supposed to feel more safe getting on the plane after being throroughly searched and frisked? I'm just saying.

Anyway, as not to offend Christians during Christmas, an Australian library took down a Harry Potter display. And, as not to offend Wiccans during the winter solstice, they'll be taking down their nativity scene. Oh, wait...

Meanwhile, you best be careful when you link to the KPMG website.

Harry Potter, Dick Armey, Index on Censorship

Can't get enough Harry Potter? Get a companion book. Not that Harry Potter's world is as difficult to manage as J.R.R. Tolkien's, but still.

Can't get enough of Richard Armey? Don't use web filters like Net Nanny, because they block the word "dick."

Can't get enough information about censorship? It's time for Index on Censorship's Freedom of Expression awards!

Can't get enough of me patting myself on the back? Thanks to Read This to Me! for mentioning L.A.C.K. on Monday!

Lemony Snicket profile, post-September 11 info purge

Scroll down to the last paragraph in this story.

When the world gets scary, kids get Lemony Snicket books. So do some adults, like me.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government is discovering that deleting info from the Web in response to the September 11 attacks isn't as easy as they all think.

Harry Potter and the occult, library director fights porn

That evil bastard Harry Potter is forcing libraries to re-evaluate their collection of books on the occult.

Meanwhile, guys who look at porn in the public library prompts the director to turn off the computers (as opposed to requesting that they don't use the websites to look at porn).
