"...media coverage is guaranteed..."

A co-owner of the Vancouver bookstore owner Kidsbooks is requesting that Macmillan UK not publish Elizabeth Laird's new book. Phyllis Simon read an advance copy of A Little Piece of Ground, about a Palestinian boy in the West Bank, and found it to be anti-Semitic.

"Now it is against books..."

I signed up for Google News Alerts to get updates about the latest book bannings and burnings, seeing as how it's in vogue these days. I've yet to get a single alert, tho, so I guess they're really in beta.

And there has been news, of a sort. The Iranian judiciary has convicted five people for breaking the country's literary laws. Not only do the author, publisher, and translator of the the controversial book Iran's Women Musicians face jail time, but so does a literary critic who reviewed it.

Bad vibrations, as opposed to Good Vibrations

The Department of Justice has indicted a California adult film distributor on charges of violating federal obscenity laws. "Today's indictment marks an important step in the Department of Justice's strategy for attacking the proliferation of adult obscenity," said John Ashcroft, adding that the DOJ would "continue to focus our efforts on targeted obscenity prosecutions that will deter others from producing and distributing obscene material."

To be fair, I will point out that the company, Extreme Associates, distributes videos with simulated rapes and snuff scenes. However, Ashcroft is making it clear that he is going after the entire adult film industry.

This doesn't appear to be a joke

PABAAH (Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood) has a list of movies to boycott. For example, Jamie Lee Curtis' Freaky Friday should be avoided because she's a "Republican Basher." Also, you can email Miramax your pre-written-for-you (not to mention misspelled-and-uneditable) thoughts on Buffalo Soldiers.

"Bewitching the Box Office"

This article by Rachel Wagner from The Journal of Religion and Film is a good overview of the pro- and anti-Harry Potter arguments.
